An Essay about Pokémon
“How to EV Train a Pokémon”
There are many different ways to train a Pokémon. Most trainers just play through the game, knocking out whichever wild Pokémon and rival trainers they happen to come across during the story. Doing so will level up your Pokémon fine. However, there is a more effective and specific way to train a Pokémon. It’s call EV training. It’s named “Effort Values” training, because it takes a great deal more effort to do correctly than normal training, and because each time you K.O. an opponent, your Pokémon gain EV points. Many players of the Pokémon games have no idea what EV training even is, and for others, it’s the only type of training that they do. Trainers who compete in Pokémon tournaments are usually the ones who always EV train their parties, their group of Pokémon. However, anyone can EV train their Pokémon if they want to have the most powerful party possible. Once you learn how to EV train, it’s not that complicated, just time consuming.
The first step in learning how to EV train a Pokémon is to learn how different Pokémon stats work. There are 5 different stats: Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk (Special Attack), Sp. Def (Special Defense), and Speed. Depending on what type of Pokémon you are training, you’ll want one or two of these stats to be higher than the others. That is the whole point of EV training; to make the stats you want to go up, go up. Every time you defeat an opponent Pokémon, your Pokémon gets between 1 and 3 EV points, depending on which Pokémon you K.O. Each Pokémon gives a different type of EV, depending on which stat they are best at. For instance, Mankey, a fighting Pokémon, will give you 1 EV point in Attack, while Espeon, a psychic Pokémon, will give you 2 EV points Sp. Atk. Most trainers don’t memorize what every Pokémon gives as an EV; most just memorize a few certain Pokémon from each category. You can’t always go just by what type the Pokémon is. It is also quite easy to find a list of which Pokémon gives what, if you look it up.
Another trick to EV training is feeding your Pokémon 10 bottles of a drink that boosts a certain stat before you start their training. 10 is the maximum you can boost a stat with drinks. Equipping your Pokémon with an EV-boosting item such as Macho Brace, which doubles your EV’s, also helps. If you can find a way to get Pokérus, a Pokémon disease that also doubles your Pokémon’s EV earnings, that also makes EV training go a lot faster. It’s best to get it from someone through a trade, though, because the odds of encountering Pokérus in the wild is 3 in 65,536.
Once your Pokémon is prepared, you’re ready to start training. Pick which stats you want to raise, and find an area with a lot of that Pokémon in the wild. Or, you can find an area with trainers who have that Pokémon and use your VS Seeker to battle with them. The object of EV training is to battle as many of the Pokémon as you can before you level up your Pokémon, so that the EV stats go up a lot more than they usually would per level. Once a Pokémon reaches level 100, it can’t be trained anymore. An easy way to control when your Pokémon will level up is to use a Rare Candy or Rare Candy Bar. These items make your Pokémon level up as soon as you feed it to them.
Usually, each Pokémon in your party has a specific purpose, such as one Pokémon for high speed, another for extreme strength, and so on. Each party can have a maximum of six, so you can have a Pokémon an expert in each category. Strategizing your Pokémon party is another part of EV training. Having a well-rounded team is essential. It is a bad idea to have a party with all of the same kind of Pokémon; a party of six Attack-based Pokémon would be useless if you had to fight against a Defense-based opponent. You would need a Sp. Atk-based Pokémon if you wanted to have the upper hand in that particular battle.
There are 25 different natures a Pokémon can have. When a Pokémon is born or encountered in the wild, when caught, will have one of the following natures: Adamant, Bashful, Bold, Brave, Calm, Careful, Docile, Gentle, Hardy, Hasty, Impish, Jolly, Lax, Lonely, Mild, Modest, Naïve, Naughty, Quiet, Quirky, Rash, Relaxed, Sassy, Serious, or Timid. Depending on which nature a Pokémon has, it will have +10% in one stat, and -10% in another. For instance, Adamant natured Pokémon get +10% in Attack, and -10% in Sp. Atk. Bold nature gets + Defense, - Attack. Brave nature gets + Attack, - Speed. Calm nature gets + Sp. Def, - Attack. Careful nature gets + Sp. Def, -Sp. Atk. Gentle nature gets + Sp. Def, - Defense. Hasty nature gets + Speed, - Defense. Impish nature gets + Defense, - Sp. Atk. Jolly nature gets + Speed, - Sp. Atk. Lax nature gets + Defense, - Sp. Def. Lonely nature gets + Attack, - Defense. Mild nature gets + Sp. Atk, - Defense. Modest nature gets + Sp. Atk, - Attack. Naïve nature gets + Speed, - Sp. Def. Naughty nature gets + Attack, - Sp. Def. Quiet nature gets + Sp. Atk, - Speed. Rash nature gets + Sp. Atk, - Sp. Def. Relaxed nature gets + Defense, - Speed. Sassy nature gets + Sp. Def, - Speed. Timid nature gets + Speed, - Attack. There are a few neutral natures as well, Bashful, Docile, Hardy, Quirky, and Serious, where none of the stats are affected.
You can’t choose which nature a Pokémon will get; it’s all random when you catch them. But you can keep catching the same species of Pokémon until you get the nature you want. Each nature has it’s pros and cons, but depending on which stat you want to be higher, you’ll probably pick a nature with +10% in that stat.
When you decide which stat you want to train for, and which Pokémon you want to train, you find an area with a lot of the type of Pokémon that gives out the EV’s you want. Then, you fight that same opponent Pokémon over and over again. When you’ve fought enough, it’s really up to you to decide when, you feed your Pokémon a Rare Candy or Rare Candy Bar and they’ll level up, gaining an exceptional amount of +stat points in that section. Then, you repeat the same process, over and over, until you get tired of the process.
Most trainers find it difficult to EV train for a long period of time because it’s tedious and time-consuming. It’s best to train your Pokémon for a few levels, or until you get tired of it, then you take a break, and get back to training. It really pays off in the end, even if you don’t EV train your Pokémon for every level. Even raising your stats just a bit can give you the upper hand in a tough battle.

Prince Erik and I got together last weekend to throw our beloved Jen a (very very late) surprise birthday party. We succeeded in surprising her, for sure! It was lovely. We played Pokemon Staduim 2 mini games all afternoon. I loves them. <3
I'm done with High School in 2 weeks. And I got into College. And know which one I'm going to. But I'm not going to tell you. :)
I'm on the Fifth day of the Third week of the Reaper Games in The World Ends With You.
I'm getting a haircut next week. I'll make a video about it.

I Like Soap
His visit made me forget how awful hospitals are. Then I had an interview with a nurse to get my medical background info. It was pretty dull. Then I had to get my blood drawn, but it wasn't so bad this time. I didn't even freak out. I was just jammin' out to my D.Gray-Man music, and the nurse stuck me with the needle. I got to see my vials of blood afterword this time, which was also cool.
Then I was off to another nurse's office thinger where she asked me more medical background stuff, and told me how to prepare for the surgery. I laughed every time they asked me if I "use any recreational drugs". I just think it's a funny term.
p.s. I'm blogging at school, and my hands smell really good. I like soap.

I Can Go the Distance
I was sitting in school today listening to Disney music on my i-pod, and the song "I Can Go the Distance" from Hercules came on. I never noticed before how much better it makes me feel when I listen to it. (Maybe I noticed because I was feeling so down before. Who knows.)
I find it kind of funny though, because I was playing 358 days over 2 yesterday, and I was owning Heartless in Olympus Colloseum. Maybe Hercules and I should be pals.
Thank you, internet, for listening to my rambles.
p.s. Brendan Fraser is my home-boy. ( + <3 Erika )

blah blah blah
I got home from school yesterday and was chilling on the computer for a bit. I think I was watching random youtube videos or something. Then, I started to half-listen to a conversation my mom was having on the telephone. Believe it or not, I'm actually quite good a eavesdropping. While half-listening, I noticed that the conversation was about me, or more specifically, about my wisdom tooth surgery. I sat in my office and started listening intently to the half of the conversation I was hearing from the next room. Before it was even over, I could tell what was going on.
My surgery was being canceled. Again. I started to feel sick. You need to understand, I've been waiting to get this surgery for a year and a half. It has been scheduled and re-scheduled at least three times. I NEED to get my wisdom teeth out! They're impacted, and I've got an extra tooth! Not getting them removed is making my TMJ worse! My jaw hurts.
I wouldn't be as upset as I am if the re-scheduling was unavoidable, but that isn't the case. The ONLY reason it was re-scheduled was because the Surgical Center I was supposed to get it done at did not contact my family until YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, THE DAY BEFORE MY SURGERY, to tell us that there was a problem. It's complicated, but long story short, my health insurance provider did not want to pay for my surgery, (side note: why the f--- not, that's what I want to know), and the center told my mom that we needed to show up with something like $2000 cash when we went in for the surgery the next day.
Stop. Who the hell has $2000 cash lying around? Not me!
My mom had no choice but to cancel. After a flurry of phone calls, she was able to get me another wisdom tooth removal appointment for me, at the Hospital this time, which better work out, or I don't know what. Third time's the charm?
All in all, yesterday sucked. Why? I got ass-raped by the Surgical Center.

woe is me
So of course, knowing my luck with things involving my teeth and jaw, my wisdom tooth surgery was re-scheduled. (Due to complications of course. /sarcasm)
I had last Friday off from school, and my mom took me to the jaw doctor at 8:30 am. When we got there, they took me into the surgery room, and even started looking for veins in my arms. The doctor couldn't find a vein in either arm, so he put a hot pack on my left arm to make it easier to see them. At the same time, I had an oxygen mask on my nose, and the doctor started talking to me about how the procedure was going to go down. I don't remember everything he said, but I know I started freaking out when he said I wouldn't be completely asleep. NEWS TO ME! He described it as a "Twilight Sleep", but the only thing I think of when I hear that is Wolf Link.
Again, me freaking out, and my mom and Doctor getting concerned for my safety, we decided it would be better for everyone if I was completely conked out during the procedure. My surgery was re-scheduled for Wednesday February 3rd 2010. Instead of going to the jaw doctor, I'm going to a surgical center. I hope I do better than I did last Friday. It sure wasn't pretty. Did I mention that all 4 of my wisdom teeth are impacted AND I have an extra tooth? That, plus I have Temporomandibular Joint Disorder / Arthritis in my jaw. I just need a new mouth completely. That would solve all my problems.
Winter Vacation
Transfer from my journal
Over winter vacation, I hung out with my friends a lot, and it was a fun time indeed. I even got to see one of my best friends I hadn't seen in forever (because we live kinda far away from each other) Prince Erik. Because our time off from school overlapped, we planned to hang out! First, we convened at my house, and our friend Alex drove us (Me, Erik, Jen, and himself) to another friend's house, where we were meeting even more people! We stayed there for maybe 2 hours, and then the people dispersed. Jen, Erik, and I went back to my house. They were sleeping over. That night, we had planned to go see the new Sherlock Holmes movie in King of Prussia with our friend, lets call him Mamma Joe. When he arrived at my house in his small car, whom we had named Alejandro just the night before, it turned out that there were already four people in the car.
Usually we don't mind sharing seats if we have to, but we had to cram seven people into a 5-seat car! It was quite a feat. We managed to squeeze five people into the back 3 seats of Alejandro. Luckily it was dark out, so no one could really see into the windows while we were driving around. I'm sure it looked akin to a clown car when we all piled out into the movie theater parking lot. And getting home? Boy what a night.
This year is over already?
Transfer from my journal.
This year flew by so fast. Its as if the older I get, the faster time goes by. Not only that, but a lot more happens in the span of a year. I remember as a child, though the years have blended together in my memory, dragged on for quite a while, and many of my days were routine. Not all of them, though, by any means. Young me had plenty of hectic days. Now, at the end of every year, I find myself saying
"Wow! This year went by so fast!"
And it truly feels so. Even though I know that it isn't true: every year is the same length, time and time again. Maybe they're just seeming to go by faster because I'm having more fun? I hope so. I just hope that the time doesn't fly by so fast that I'm my parent's age before I know it. I know I'm going to miss being a kid.
I think I'd like to savor my youth as long as possible. At least I still look and act like a twelve-year-old boy most of the time.
Sick of being Sick
Transfer from my journal.
I'm sick of being sick. First I got a virus that lasted for about 2 days, but I got better and went back to school fine. Then, 6 days later, not even a week, I was hit (repeatedly in the face) with "swine flu". At least, the hospital said it was swine flu. I remain skeptical, but I sure felt sick enough to believe them.
I went to the ER at the hospital after I spiked a fever of 104 degrees. They tested me for swine flu by "swabbing" my nasal cavity. It felt like they were stabbing my brain through my face, or more specifically, my nose. It reminded me an awful lot of the method used to remove a person's brain before they were to be mummified.
To sum it up, not a pleasant experience. The only up side to this sad trip to the hospital was that I got one of those cool hospital patient bracelets. I kept it, and plan on wearing it for fun.
After that, my health seemed to be going up hill, slowly getting better, but then, I fell off the cliff of healthfulness again. My health declined, and I had new symptoms that sure hurt a lot more than the previous! After a while, my mom got worried, took me to the doctor again, and I had to get blood tests done! Did I mention that I have a legit phobia of medical needles? So, anyway, after the usual ritual of me freaking out, and my mom forcibly holding me down, the nurse could finally stick me and draw my blood. Several vials, I might add.
After a couple of days, we got the anticipated call from Mr. Doctor Man. Turns out, I had an acute case of Mono. In other words, I had a really, really especially bad case of Mono. Sucks to be me.
Still sick of being sick.
(And I'm just going to add that I missed a month and a week of school. like woah.)
Introduction
It's my senior year of high school, and I'm taking Writer's Craft, and we are required to write 10 pages of whatever every week. I've noticed as of late, a lot of what I've been writing in my journal sounds an awful lot like a blog, so I figured, "Hey, why not?".
And here it is. Welcome to my world.
